The Moxie - October Edition

Mox-ie noun: force of character, determination, nerve, or pep

Welcome to the October Edition of The Moxie!

This month, I had a bit of an epiphany: I’m way better when I’m working alongside others. After catching up with some old Festival pals, we reminisced about the good ol' days in corporate sponsorship (when it wasn’t so hard!). We also talked about the magic that happens when you find the right people to work with—how much easier and more enjoyable everything becomes. It got me thinking about why I started The Collectiv. in the first place.

Running a business solo can feel like shouting into the void sometimes. But when I embraced collaboration, it just clicked. It turns out, my nervous system loves it too—less stress, more fun! We live in a world that glorifies doing everything alone (you know, the “be your own boss” thing), but honestly, what if we flipped that idea on its head? What if instead of the solo hustle, we thrived by teaming up, learning from each other, and sharing the journey?

That’s exactly what we do in The Collectiv. It’s not about me leading the charge—it’s about us, growing stronger together, cheering each other on, and building something incredible in a way that’s truly collaborative. In fact, I’ve just opened up the opportunity for members to lead their own workshops each month, so we can all learn from each others wealth of experience and knowledge. The energy inside The Collectiv. is like nothing else— 25 amazing members and counting, and we’re all here to lift each other up.

So, if you’re tired of going it alone (and who isn’t?), come join us. Whether you need accountability, support, or just some creative inspiration, The Collectiv is the place to be. You’ll find yourself in a space where your ideas, your voice, and your unique journey truly matter. And yes, there will be laughs along the way (because what's growth without a little fun?).

Now’s the time — let’s do this together.

Here's what our members are saying:

“Kat’s approach is refreshingly collaborative. The Collectiv. shows us there’s more than enough to go around, and that we can achieve more together.”

“LOVE being part of this community. It’s exciting, uplifting, supportive, creative, fun, and more!!!”

“One of the most powerful experiences we can have is coming together as a group, sharing our vulnerability and truth. Kat says, ‘You have to unify to amplify,’ and it’s so true.”

“A loving and powerful space to connect, plus the opportunity to be coached by the most loving and powerful coach. Experiencing breakthroughs while witnessing others being coached is so flippin’ powerful and magical.”

"I feel very lucky to have found Kat. She is truly a powerful guide, holding space intuitively and bringing everyone together so we all feel supported with our complex lives.”

“The Collectiv is a powerful community—a safe, supportive space to connect with entrepreneurs, receive bangin’ coaching, and get creative about our businesses. It’s motivating, supportive, and brings results!”

If you’ve been craving more community, more connection, and more collaboration in your life, now is the perfect time to join us. Whether you’re looking for accountability, support, or just a space to breathe and be inspired, The Collectiv. is here for you.

In the spirit of shared learning - this month, I asked my 10-year-old for some advice, and, honestly, it’s too good not to share! Sometimes kids have a way of cutting through the noise and offering the simplest (and most brilliant) perspectives.

Here’s what she said...

"If you are feeling insecure about yourself or thinking that others are looking at you and judging you, look at them and ask yourself what their deepest insecurity is? You can’t see it right? So they won’t see yours…."

"Go about life like it’s your birthday everyday!"

In this edition of The Moxie, we’re thrilled to introduce Collectiv. member Emily, a dedicated yoga teacher from Shaftesbury. After the sudden loss of her mum in 2021, Emily turned to yoga as a way to heal and reconnect with herself.

Now, as she transforms her garden shed into a home yoga studio, Emily is not only teaching locally but also bringing yoga into schools to support young people. Her journey is a beautiful testament to resilience, healing, and the power of connection through yoga.

1) Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your background. What inspired you to become a yoga teacher?

I live in Shaftesbury, Dorset with my lovely boys, Jason, Rory and Ben. There is a softness about the West Country and a certain magic in the land, we have lived here for about 9 years and feel very lucky to call this lovely place home.

For the past 10 or so years I have put most of my energy into raising my boys whilst running my Etsy Shop, Rock & Soul as a side hustle. I have always loved yoga but it was during lockdown that I started practicing again with commitment- I am grateful to lockdown for that, I think some good did come out of that weird time. Then my life took a very unexpected turn in 2021 when I lost my Mum unexpectedly. The shock and pain of her loss completely rocked my world. I had no idea how to express the grief so it manifested as

panic attacks. It was during this time that my yoga practice became not just something I did for pleasure but entirely sacrosanct, this process of breathing and moving felt deeply cathartic. Whilst I felt completely lost at sea during that time, yoga was like a life raft and for the time that I practiced I could release what I needed to and there was space for some stillness to enter my heart. I now feel very connected to my Mum when I lay on my mat, I think because we are so quiet but entirely receptive in that state, so I have a new relationship with her now, through yoga and I think she is happy about that.

I first went to a yoga class with my Mum when I was 11 or 12. I remember thinking it was a very nice way for people to spend time together. We were doing a shoulder stand and one lady let out a loud fart and the whole room erupted in laughter, there was a nice sense of community about people being together moving and breathing, farting and laughing in very authentic humanness, I remember being touched by it. I properly picked yoga up in my early twenties during an Ayurvedic retreat, again with my Mum in Kerala. The Yoga teacher there was called Raviji, he had sparkling eyes and a shiny bright

aura. I received an amazing transmission from him the week I was there. I remember feeling like I had come home to myself through the practice and that experience needed to be shared with the world - Yoga, a universal homecoming for weary waywards!

2) What challenges or obstacles have you faced on your journey and how did you overcome them?

I think the biggest challenges for me have been a lack of self-confidence and consequently repressed self-expression.  I know some people might find that surprising as I can present myself as a confident person but I have a big fear of expressing myself vocally. I have also lived with panic disorder since I was 18. I did a course of CBT 3 years ago and during one exercise I realised that what I desired more than anything was connection and I was doing everything

within my power to avoid it, and that was the root of my panic. So I spent a lot of time contemplating connection and what it looked like; connection to my husband and children, to my friends, to my community, to nature, to the planet. Whilst CBT birthed this epiphany of what was lacking in my life - connection,  yoga has provided the means to implement and integrate these connections fully and that has been so deeply healing for me personally.  In yoga we talk about ‘siddhis’ that are gifts or fruits of daily practice and one gift

that I have felt is being much more present to my children. Previously when I was functioning in flight mode my standard response was “in a minute” and typically that minute never arrived… Now when my children want to speak to me or express something I feel so much more present to them. I know it sounds like a small thing, but on a universal scale, it feels huge. I think being entirely present to my children and hearing them is helping me to heal the lack of self-confidence and fear of self-expression that stems from my childhood.

They say that children are sent into our lives to teach us the lessons that we need to learn and I will forever be grateful to my boys for this.

3) Describe a moment or experience that was a turning point in your life or career. How did it impact you?

Meeting my yoga teacher Mark Whitwell. I was introduced to him by a friend and yoga teacher, Emma Warmington who has travelled the world training in all sorts of styles of yoga over decades and she told me with such faith and conviction “Emily he is the only teacher you will ever need to learn from” and she was right. I have learned so much from Mark, it almost feels hard to quantify. The biggest turning point I would say is learning that the problem is the seeking- seeking truth, seeking enlightenment, seeking transformation.

Mark says that seeking is a response to the suffering caused by the “I am separate” conditioning of society. He says “The mind is disturbed because it has been convinced that there is somewhere to get to and it is trying to get us there.” Yoga is the practical means to recognise that life is a unity condition, first, you connect the inhale to the exhale and then the breath to the body movement and then the body movement to world it exists within. This realisation creates the most wonderful feeling of coming home, and the illusion of “working towards” a future ideal melts away. To fully participate in life as a given reality and to enjoy it.  We are not problems that need to be solved we are humans that need to connect. End of story.

4) What motivated you to join The Collectiv?

Connection! Ha ha this is becoming a bit of a theme…  But jokes apart, sailing the seas of self-employment can feel lonely at times and it is very nice to drop anchor with other people on a similar journey and share experiences. And of course you dear Kat…. I know we have a decades-long history but I am really in awe of your work and watching you fulfil your dharma inspires me to do the same. It has a palpable ripple effect and we all feel it- as a collective. It’s

powerful.

5) How has The Collectiv. helped you in achieving your goals or vision?

Last night you shared an idea for us all to come forwards and run a live workshop online with the group. Whilst I’m currently only teaching in person I would like to start teaching online too and it would be super beneficial for me to run a class with the group as a practice session in exchange for feedback and experience. Also on a purely practical level, the workshops are so helpful for us to gain new insights and ideas into how to expand our businesses, collaborate, and maximise our potential. It’s very easy when self-employed to get stuck in a pattern of doing things in a way that feels comfortable and safe to us and I really admire the way you encourage us all to step out a bit more and take a few risks, it’s healthy and it makes way for growth.

6)  What are your future aspirations or goals? What is next for you?

I am currently renovating our garden shed into a Yoga Studio so I will be teaching yoga from home in Shaftesbury, Dorset as of the 9th October which has been a dream of mine for the past two years it is so exciting to see it finally coming into manifestation… So I will be teaching 3 classes a week from home this Autumn along with 1:1 sessions which I love as it gives me a chance to get to know my students on a deeper level.

I am also taking part in Yoga Education in Schools Facilitator Training which is has been created by my wonderful friend and teacher, Andy Raba through The Heart of Yoga online studio. It is a programme that has been specifically curated to give young people (11-18) a yoga education, the importance of which not only helps them to navigate the challenges of adolescence but also sets them up with a yoga practice as a foundation for life. So I am really

looking forward to that and bringing breath led yoga to schools and teens in my local community.

I’m also looking forward to some really exciting collaborations in 2025 one of which will be with you! I don’t want to give too much away just yet but let’s just say it will be a summer equinox unlike any other June 2025!

Filmworms....

I went to see The Outrun at the weekend - Watching The Outrun felt incredibly relatable, the whirlwind of your twenties followed by the healing powers of nature and the sea 🌊. Growing up near the sea holds a special pull towards it for life!

Orkney was captured beautifully on screen, and Saoirse Ronan was cast perfectly in the lead role. By the end, I was in tears—there’s something about the raw beauty of the landscape and Rona’s journey that spoke to me soul.

Now I’m keen to read the book because I imagine Amy Liptrot’s descriptions of Orkney, the wind, and the power of the sea are even more breathtaking on the page!
